The Post-Workout Meal - Ideal foods

You have been working out, and that means your muscles used metabolic fuels quickly. Moreover, to allow you to workout for a good period of 45 minutes or longer, the body had to mobilize its stored fuels to make fatty acids, glucose, and amino acids available for oxidation.

High Protein Diet

This is called the catabolic (growth) process and cannot occur simultaneous to anabolic (repair) processes such as glycogen formation and protein synthesis. We need a post-workout meal.

Therefore, after a workout, your body must switch over from a catabolic environment to an anabolic one. The post-workout meal will effect your hormonal environment so this can take place. A good post-workout meal will provide carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into the body so it can begin repairing damaged tissue and rebuilding up your fuel reserves.

Proteins

Proteins are crucial to post exercise anabolism (repair). Why? Because Protein will provide essential amino acids needed to rebuild damaged tissues. In fact, the body itself needs somehow to adapt to the workout rigors, and protein gives it those essential amino acids required for endogenous protein synthesis. In other words, the body's ability to adapt to exercise is dependent on getting available protein.

How much protein is required after a workout? No one is exactly sure. Right now, professional trainers think the total protein intake for athletes is between 1.6-1.8 grams per kilogram body weight. However, you must know your body can't effectively store amino acids. So, you must in any case, eat proteins every 3-4 hours.

A post-workout meal should contain some slowly digesting protein that will allow a steady release of amino acids into your system well after your workout.
Carbs

Even as carbs are important for endurance in your workout they are crucial for glycogen recovery. Today there is a great deal of discussion on what type of carb is best for post exercise recovery.

There is the commercial point of view that wishes you to drink an expensive sugary solution with other additives. Some trainers advise a simple sugar and water solution, and other advice eating a good meal.

The truth is that no matter what you eat, the results are about the same, as long as there are sufficient levels of carbs present. This is true whether or not the carbs are alone or with other nutrients. You need to replenish your glycogen and you do that with carbs.
Fat

There is also an on-going argument about if fat should be added to the post-workout meal. One point that is agreed upon is the fats should be in the form of fatty acids such as Omega-3 and 6.

Liquids.

It cannot be stressed enough that you need to replenish your liquids after a workout. A general rule to follow is about a 3 glasses of clean water over an hour after the workout session

An Ideal Post-Workout Meal

A simple sandwich is perfect. The bread should be high quality whole wheat or rye, and the contents can be tuna or bacon and tomato. No mayonnaise should be used, instead use high quality extra-virgin olive oil. This meal or similar will give you all you need for that post-workout recovery. If you are prone to the pre-mixed drinks available, compare the labels and prices, and make sure there are enough carbs and proteins (and not too much) for your constitution. Your body will know when you have had too much.

Protein Principles for Diabetes

Dietary considerations can present a Hobson's choice in diabetes. Even when the intake is nutritious, assimilating it can be another matter. Then there is the problem of progression of diabetic complications if one ends up with excess glucose or fat in the system. Excess carbohydrates in a meal, and the resulting uncontrolled blood sugar levels can be detrimental to any number of tissues, from the lens of the eye, to the neurons, small blood vessels and the kidneys. Fat is also a problem with increase incidences of atherosclerosis, large vessel disease and cardiac complications. What, then is the appropriate macronutrient for the diabetic population? Enough medical literature exists to suggest that in diabetes, proteins are probably the best bet.

High Protein Diet

Proteins are the natural choice of the body when faced with diabetes. In uncontrolled diabetes, muscle protein is broken down into amino acids to be converted into glucose by the liver. If left to fend for itself, this can create a commotion within the body. Since proteins have to supply enough energy to substitute for carbohydrates, proteins are broken down faster than they are made. The body ends up with a protein deficit, a situation with subtle, yet far-reaching effects on normal body functions. Importantly, for diabetics, a protein deficit has been shown to impair resistance to infections (Ganong WF). Replenishing the depleting protein stores is a vital requirement of all diabetic diets.

High Protein Diet

Importance of proteins in a diabetic has been well documented. The American Associations of Clinical Endocrinologists have made it clear that not much evidence exists to indicate that the patients with diabetes need to reduce their intake of dietary proteins. The AACE recommends that 10-20% of the calorie intake in diabetes should come from proteins (AACE Diabetes Guidelines). It is in fact believed that this is one nutrient that does not increase blood glucose levels in both diabetics and healthy subjects (Gannon et al).

Nutrition therapy for diabetes has progressed from prevention of obesity or weight gain to improving insulin's effectiveness and contributing to improved metabolic control (Franz MJ). In this new role, a high protein diet (30% of total food energy) forms a very pertinent part of nutrition therapy. One of the most important causes for type II diabetes is obesity. Excess body fat raises insulin resistance and higher levels of insulin are required to bring down blood sugars as the weight increases (Ganong WF). Another problem with excess fat is the clogging of arteries with atherosclerotic plaques that is responsible for a wide range of diabetic complications. Any mechanism that reduces body fat decreases insulin resistance and improves blood glucose control. Parker et al have also shown that a high protein diet decreased abdominal and total fat mass in women with type II diabetes. Other studies by Gannon et al. and Nuttall et al have verified that blood glucose levels and glycosylated hemoglobin (a marker of long term diabetic control) reduce after 5 weeks on a diet containing 30% of the total food energy in the form of proteins and low carbohydrate content. It is speculated that a high protein diet has a favorable effect in diabetes due to the ability of proteins and amino acids to stimulate insulin release from the pancreas. Thus, a high protein diet is not only safe in diabetes, but can also be therapeutic, resulting in improved glycemic control, and decreased risk of complications related to diabetes.

The benefits of a high protein diet do not end here. Individual protein components of such a diet, when aptly chosen, can have other advantages as well. Dietary supplements containing proteins like whey and casein come highly recommended. Casein is a milk protein and has the ability to form a gel or clot in the stomach. The ability to form this clot makes it very efficient in nutrient supply. The clot is able to provide a sustained, slow release of amino acids into the blood stream, sometimes lasting for several hours (Boirie et al. 1997). A slow sustained release of nutrients matches well with the limited amount of insulin that can be produced by the pancreas in diabetes. A protein supplement containing casein can thus increase the amount of energy assimilated from every meal and, at the same time, reduce the need for pharmacological interventions to control blood sugar.

Whey proteins and caseins also contain "casokinins" and "lactokinins', (FitzGerald) which have been found to decrease both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive humans (Seppo). In addition, whey protein forms bioactive amine in the gut that promotes immunity. Whey protein contains an ample supply of the amino acid cysteine. Cysteine appears to enhance glutathione levels, which has been shown to have strong antioxidant properties -- antioxidants mop up free radicals that induce cell death and play a role in aging.

Thus, development of a protein supplement containing casein and whey can provide an apt high protein diet and its health benefits to individuals suffering from diabetes, obesity and hypercholesterolemia.

High Protein Diets Can Make You Lose Weight

Because protein does not appear to be the sole type of food mankind is designed to consume, it is recommended that you talk to your physician before undertaking such a diet. Whatever opinions are expressed in this article, they are just opinions based on small observations that may only apply to individuals other than you. High Protein Diet

What we don't know is just how reliably weight loss with high protein diets can be predicted. We do know that some people have lost a lot of weight on high protein diets. We also know that a lot of people have not lost weight on high protein diets. Probably a greater majority just can't stand to eat nothing but protein for a prolonged period of time. The reason I mention that is that weight loss is generally recorded in the first month or two of high protein diets.

High Protein Diet

Another thing we know is that among those who have lost a lot of weight, there are also signs of dehydration or at least a lack of bloating. That may be why the weight loss ceases after a period of time. After all, you can only give up so much water.

The interesting thing here is that on standard diets, which consist of balanced diets, weight loss is much slower, but continues on as long as the person keeps the total calorie count down. Many do give up, however, because at times weight loss may be so slow as to be unnoticeable. However, those who stick with it a long time come to realize that the weight loss does continue even when it is unnoticeable.

Weight loss with high protein diets seems to have an opposite psychological effect. A bunch of weight is lost right away when beginning the high protein diets. The encouraged dieter is led to continue, but suddenly notices the weight loss has stopped. Tired of the limited diet plan, the discouraged dieter usually quits the high protein diet right away.

Unproven theories about how weight loss composition occurs may have been the most damaging part of the development of high protein diets. For example, one theory was that you would lose less muscle on a high protein diet because your body wouldn't need to break down as much protein from your body to burn as energy. But when someone tried to back that up with a study, the results showed the opposite. People who ate balanced diets while dieting had a slightly lower percentage of their weight loss occur as a result of muscle loss. The theory of weight loss by ketosis when eating only fats and proteins has also come from questionable amounts of evidence.

Mankind just isn't designed to exist on one type of nutrient. Our bodies are designed to use a wide variety of nutrients, and dysfunction well when missing any of them. So you should definitely consult at least your doctor, and probably a nutritionist as well, before you begin any extreme diets, such as high protein diets.
